What Advocates Need to Know About Geriatrics

Speaker: Scott Kaiser, MD -

Dr. Kaiser is the Chief Innovation Officer of the Motion Picture and Television Fund in Los Angeles and a UCLA physician and geriatrician.

Dr. Kaiser is a passionate advocate for the improvement of aging services and geriatric care. He is committed to improving health and well-being through a community-oriented approach to the care of older adults. Dr. Kaiser initiated research exploring the psychology of behavior change with regard to increasing physical activity and partnered with the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging to produce broadcast media projects aimed at directly addressing the needs of older adults. He developed content for and appeared on the “Aging Well in LA” program and created, produced, and co-hosted a novel series, “On the Move,” encouraging older adults to become physically active.

During this session, Dr. Kaiser discussed:
  • The geriatrician is someone with specialty training that can play a unique role in the care of complex older patients.
  • There is a broad spectrum of issues and situations for which geriatric medicine provides unique insights, guidance and expertise.
  • The key components of a geriatric assessment and screening.
  • There will never be enough geriatricians. Advocates must become informed about geriatric issues and support each other in providing the best care and support to this population.
